After pitching head-first into Man from U.N.C.L.E. (TV) fandom, and inhaling a half-century of fic across a variety of websites, it surprised me to learn that there was a dearth of fic featuring more recent fandom tropes!

While MFU (TV) fandom practically wrote the primer on hurt/comfort fic (and a superb body of work it is, too), I didn't come across many soulmate stories, or woke-up-married fic, or that current fandom staple, omegaverse. Also absent was my favourite, the bodyswap trope, which - - in this fandom of mission hijinks and problem-solving and a troubleshooting spy duo who are ostensibly as different as chalk and cheese - - you would really have thought the fic would be primed to delve deeply into...

…Anyway, nature abhors a vacuum, and the heart wants what it wants. And, as such, behold my latest chaptered fic! Involving bodyswapping, and also discussions on the nature of the soul, Napoleon's body wearing a turtleneck, Illya's body wearing exploding underwear, dogs, seduction, boys in peril, and more pining than you could shake a stick at. (COMPLETE.)

The Turnabout Affair (…because The Bodyswap Affair would be too on-the-nose ;-) )
Napoleon/Illya, [Mature]. No archive warnings apply.
On a mission, Napoleon and Illya accidentally trigger a mind transference device, and discover something they should have known all along.
Beta by [personal profile] timemidae and [personal profile] vysila.

I will say, MFU (TV) fandom does a good line in injuryfic! Here is my own there-was-only-one-bed injuryfic - - if you were into something smuttier, and also complete. Written for [community profile] smut4smut.

The Dangerous Pleasures Affair
Napoleon/Illya, [Explicit]. Depictions of aftermath of violence.
Illya has rescued Napoleon from the usual dangers of THRUSH captivity. But there’s nothing more dangerous than having to take care of his partner in the way Napoleon wants him to.
Beta by [personal profile] sparky955.

Come join me in the MFU (TV) handbasket, and enjoy 60 delicious years' worth of fannish output! Or, you know, create your own ;-)

ETA: Turnabout is now complete! With an explicit scene that you may skip and not lose plot or outcome, if that was your preference.

Like many Brit and Brit-adjacent people in fandom, I’m not above dealing with the crapstorm that is UK politics these days by shipping it.

There’s nothing quite like deeply flawed politicians actually being human and caring about their country and also having it off with each other, even though in reality it’s overwhelmingly likely that they’re total wankers with no redeeming qualities and aren’t even getting their kink on in Westminster. LOLitics is an improvement on RL, is my main premise…

…Anyway, the big news on the LOLitics and UK politics front is that Boris is finally gone, after a combination of Partygate and backing an abuser and the “Darwinian” Parliamentary system (and a characteristic “It’s not me, it’s you!” farewell speech).

Which means my darling Daddy Starmer is suddenly up to bat! Admittedly, he’s doing reasonably well, and suddenly I have some guilt regarding my prurient interest in this poor man, who is just trying to do his best for the country, and his potential underground life as a kinky dom out to spank his political opponents into submission…

…all right, possibly not that last part. At least not literally.

ETA: I was going to say that there was sadly no fic! But there is in fact some now <3

Here’s the opportunity, Sir Keir! The UK is counting on you to rise manfully to the task, etc.

Alas, poor Kate, still strapped down in Man From U.N.C.L.E. (TV) fandom and too besotted to find her way to the exits!

What she has found her way to: a discord, thanks to [personal profile] thisbluespirit, which also discusses old school telly, an image library, from which the above not-in-any-way-slashy image is taken (The Foxes and Hounds Affair, Season 2 Episode 4, copyrights Arena Productions and MGM Television), and a LJ community mirrored here on DW.

At first you think it's Light Entertainment, and then soon enough you've descended down the rabbit hole... )

As it happens, I am in fact still around! But just when I was telling folks that 2022 could absolutely not be as bad as 2021 had been (and I'm aware I said the same about 2020), February proved us wrong.

That said, the fickle fandom gods being what they are, it has been the perfect time to fall in love once again with old school telly's Man from U.N.C.L.E. (TV), and that pair of irresistible, snarky spy partners on opposite sides of the Cold War divide: suave, decadent American Napoleon Solo, and cool, sarcastic, prickly Soviet Illya Kuryakin, who did hail, in canon, from Kyiv, Ukraine.

(Yes, yes, you aren't surprised at all by this turn of events; you'd be a monkey's, you know.) That said, I have always loved them, and, revisiting this fandom, which envisioned a brighter world of international co-operation, to say nothing of friendship, and intimacy across geographical and ideological divides, is proving a present source of comfort in the midst of the current goings-on.

Some resources:
- An episode guide, an original script archive, and seriously hilarious slashy episode recaps courtesy of Ms. Morgan Richter
- Cinema Retro's UNCLE HQ, with classic anecdotes about show and actors, and delightful, obscure memorabilia, and the ultimate archival fansite (both TV and film)
- A comprehensive chronology, and a postulated link to Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton universe; other chronos here and here
- A fantastic repository of post-show canon short stories and novels (and a repository of the actual canon)
- A discussion of the official tie-in novels, from whence some of the fandom’s fanon mainstays derived
- Old school fic archives Chrome & Gunmetal, and Observations (by Linda Cornett); this is Elizabeth Bear’s smart, gorgeous story.
- Adorable, funny fanvids: Catherine Mamontova, For_Love_and_Mercy, Mary van Deusen, PRZed, and the amazing Vysila.
- A joint Return interview, and McCallum hilariously hosting the 60s version of Top of the Pops, as Illya!

And in the spirit of international co-operation and friendship, the fandom is running a fundraiser for Ukraine. I have managed to snag a couple of fic offers, which I am very excited about. Bids on offers are still open, if you were keen! (It's for an excellent cause!)

Edited to add: I've just received one of the MFU stories which I bid on for Ukraine -

Normalization [Twenty Years Later] by [personal profile] timemidae
Twenty years after The Final Affair, Napoleon and Illya meet for coffee.

A sequel to Timemidae's amazing, heartbreaking The Super-Final Affair, written in the same universe as David McDaniel's semicanon novel The Final Affair. The original broke my heart; with this follow-up, twenty years later, she has put my heart back together again. I'm a very grateful recipient! Everyone should read this <3

The [community profile] yuletide season is almost upon us, and I have been considering my requests. Most of my fandoms are very small, and none more so than Enemy at the Door (LWT, 1978-1980), starring old British stars of the small screen, Alfred Burke and Simon Cadell.

Borrowed from [personal profile] thisbluespirit: it's October, which in fannish terms means it is time for our favourites to endure all kinds of suffering in service of writerly ids and the wider narrative tropes fandom likes.

In short, it's time for the Whumptober multifandom writing challenge! Favourite fictional characters, be very afraid.

Today's tidbit is brought to you from the depths of my admiration for Jack Hedley, Colditz (1972)'s dashing Colonel Preston.

This is an excellent resource on both the show and the actors, including photographs of its filming locations: Colditz on Wordpress.

And the resource links a rather darling article, from some women's magazine column Kathie in the Kitchen, featuring Jack and his wife and a recipe for veal in soured cream: Cooking with the S.B.O. Next week, how to make delicious strawberry cheesecake!
